The January 26, 2010 issue front page is good because it mentions the Haiti earthquake that happened earlier in January and the school is connected to it by fund-raising to help the Haiti victims. But it should be a whole article instead of just a picture since it looks like the picture is going to lead into an article. The headline is also before the picture making it a little confusing since it takes up three quarters of the page. “At the very top of the story. In descending order, then, arrange story elements like this: photo, cutline, headline, text. Any other sequence may cause confusion.” (Harrower 10.) It also has shorter vertical columns for one story. “Horizontal shapes are pleasing to the eye. And they often create the illusion that stories are shorter than they really are.” (Harrower 49.)

In the November 10, 2009 issue, on page 5 the layout is a little bland. There’s a lot of long text that could be broken up. “Long vertical legs like these can get tiring to read.” (Harrower 49.) But there is an infographic to show information in a interesting way. The shorter vertical columns are easier to follow. “Horizontal layouts flow left to right, the way readers naturally read. You’ll create the most attractive designs by keeping legs betweel1 2 and 10 inches deep.” (Harrower 49.)

1.Be aware of what you are saying: ‘retard’ is not ‘stupid’

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines mental retardation as a “sub average intellectual ability equivalent to or less than an IQ of 70 that is accompanied by significant deficits in abilities (as in communication of self-care) necessary for independent daily functioning, is present from birth or infancy, and is manifested especially by delayed or abnormal developement , by learning diffculties, and by problems in social adjustment.

2. The lead is too long and doesn’t seem interesting.

3. The words ‘retarded’ and ‘stupid’ are two different things that are heard all over.

4. It gets right to the point and the definition can go after the lead. It’s also shorter.

1.Prom Costs more than its ticket value

With prom around the corner, everyone is worrying so much about getting a date that they forget dresses and boutonnieres don’t fall from the sky.

2.Doesn’t really make sense when it talks about boutonnieres.

3.Prom isn’t always worth the price of the ticket.

4. It’s direct and makes more sense.

ASB is selling T-shirts to aid Haiti after the Jan. 12 earthquake.

2. The lead is just stating the obvious. It’s kind of plain.

3. Due to the Haiti earthquake on Jan. 12, ASB is selling T-shirts to aid those who were affected.

4. It gives more details.

High school relationships may be fun and exciting, but are they going to end in marriage?

2. It’s a yes or no question.

3. High school relationships, although fun and exciting, don’t always end in further commitment.

4. The lead is rephrased in a way where it states what the article is about.

Summary lead: A luger’s death in a horrible training accident mere hours before the Opening Ceremonies on Feb. 12 immediately cast a shroud of gloom over what are supposed to be fun and games.

This lead answers the who, what, when, and where questions. The who is a luger, the what is his death, the when is on Febuary 12 before the opening ceremonies, and the where is at the Olympics.

Feature lead: California’s dire and ongoing budget predicament is raising a tough — and touchy — question about the state’s finances, one that some at the Capitol do not want discussed: Is California bankrupt?

This lead opens by describing California’s budget predicament and also uses a question to get the reader’s attention and interested.

Beat: Boosters

This past Saturday, January 30th, was Washington’s annual Crab Feast hosted by the Boosters club. They had a great turnout with 425 people attending. ASB and Helen Paris presented a slide show that everyone enjoyed. Their ticket sales were down from a few years ago but they contributed that to the poor economy.

I’ve learned a lot this year so far in journalism. I’ve learned how to write articles and reviews for movies and restaurants. I’ve also been able to write better and not be so repetitive. This semester was good because my writing got better. At first, getting ads was a little difficult as I didn’t know all the things that the ad required to be able to be run in the newspaper. I didn’t know that there was a specific format for the ads to be in. I also learned how to interact with people for interviews and getting information for articles. The course met my expectations by I knew I’d become a better writer and learn how to write about events and things that are in my section. What I learned met my expectations because since it’s a class and the actual paper I knew that I’d learn new things. My expectations for the second half of the year are to continue getting better at writing and reporting.

The infographics on this cover is good for showing information through pictures. It shows how Anerica is rising and it gets your attention. We could do something like this in the Hatchet on the front page to get people’s attention and make them want to read about what’s in the paper.

Beat: Boosters

The Boosters has a meeting the second Monday of every month in the student center at 7 P.M. They have reports by ASB, a school administrator, and the athletic director. Coaches also attend the meetings and if they need anything they make requests. Boosters discusses any concerns that people might have about the school and athletics. In the past meeting they talked about the crab feed and divided the responsibilities for preparing for the event. A wrestling coach requested financial assistance for warm-ups. They are currently in need of someone to update their website. They don’t have a specific monetary goal for each year but they raise money through the Crab Feed and snack bars, escrip, membership fees and any other event that they might plan.

As usual, the Washington High School Boosters are hosting their annual Crab Feed to raise money for school sports. They started planning in September and they have several committees set up the food, drinks, raffle prizes, and everything else. They have always had a good amount of people to come and support the school. “Each sport has the potential to raise thousands of dollars,” says Lily Santeramo. At the Crab Feed there will be raffle items, silent auctions, pasta, salad, and of course crab for everyone to enjoy. The Annual Crab Feed is at Holy Spirit on January 30. Tickets are on sale for $40.00 but no underage children are allowed due to alcohol being served.

Advertising: Dayak’s Den soccer

On Friday I went to Dayak’s Den after school after they called on Thursday. They said that they were interested in putting an ad in the newspaper but they also had a few questions. They asked about putting a coupon as an ad in the paper and if they can change the date that they want to put their ad in the paper in advance. They said to come back on Monday and they’ll have the advertising rate card filled out and have an ad ready. On Monday, November 1st I went back and they had the form filled out and a copy of the ad attached. Then later I aksed them to email a pdf copy of the ad. Their ads will be featured in the November, December, and January issues.
